I love reading. I develop the love for books from a very young age.
When I was young, my mum who is Chinese educated would borrow Chinese books from the library and read to me. She will mimicked characters in the stories and she made them all came to live and I would let me imagination run.
When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I started on my first so-called story books, Peter and Jane a.k.a Key Words Scheming Books. I remembered that the Peter and Jane books has different volumes and it would starts from very simple english and gradually as I move up the volumes, I learn new words each time. I begin to read about their adventures and I even fantasised living in a tree house some day just because Peter and Jane had one at their garden!
Since I ‘graduated’ from Peter and Jane books, I move on to Babysitter Club and Sweet Valley series and also other books. In my teenage years, I would often go to the library on weekends and sometimes I used this excuse just to sneak out with my friends for some fun after a short visit to the library.
At that time, I would get obsessed with reading that I read when I am on a bus, I read when I am in the shower! (I know, it is wasteful to let the water run while I read), I read hiding story books behind text books and pretend to be really studious, sometimes I refused to shower or sleep until I finished it. I am pretty crazy I think. Hey, at least the authors got whole of my attention!
Since technology creeps into my life, I always seems to have 1001 things to do than to read. Thank goodness for my Kindle Paperwhite* I bought last year. No regrets. It actually helped me to get into the reading mood more often and as much as I love holding a physical book and smelling one, a Kindle is more practical because everything I want to read is store into one little device.
Most of the time, I like to read romance (hey, I still have that romantic and sappy side of me), history, non-fiction, self-help, travels and adventure books. Occasionally I will read some thriller and crime books but they are not my favourite genre and I doubt you can catch me reading any horror books

Sadly though, nowadays people snigger when we say our hobby is reading, because so many people hijacked it, especially in job hunting resumes, that nobody really takes this hobby seriously.
I’ve been reading for as long as I can remember things, and the genre keep changing. Enid Blyton > Jin Yong (those ancient Chinese martial arts novel) > motivational books and investment books > Twilight series > my recent drugs, Harlequin books, specifically from Sarah Mayberry and Fiona Brand. It’s kind of addictive for me, I read one book, then in the end they include an excerpt for the next book, and I’m hooked. This process has been going on for 2 months now.
Not really, just that as you grow older, when there are so many things that need your attention, sometimes it is hard to even stay focus on a book. Oh yeah! How can i forget about those classic Enid Blyton books!! Jin Yong is too in depth for my brain. Ha.. At least they provide you with a good break away from the real world. 🙂
I never liked reading books until I started travelling over 4 years ago. I grabbed one book when I was travelling in China to read it partly and couldn’t stop reading! I guess it all depends on our personality and different circumstances.
Yeah! Sometimes it provides a good source of entertainment during those boring travelling times! 🙂
